Talkstories: Where Conversations Come Alive
Written by: Team Vallige
At Vallige, we believe conversation is more than words. It’s connection. It’s identity. It’s a way of reminding someone who they are—and who they’ve always been.
In a previous post, we shared how we designed Talkstories with safety as our foundation. If you haven’t read it yet, you can find it here: Safety First: How Vallige Designs Talkstories
But safety is just the beginning.
Today, we want to talk about two of the principles that guide everything we’re building with Talkstories:
Keep the Conversation Going
Improve Mood Whenever Possible
Keeping the Conversation Going
One of the hardest parts of dementia is not just memory loss—it’s the breakdown of conversation. The pauses get longer. The topics become harder to access. And over time, conversations can fade away altogether.
We’re working to change that.
At the heart of every Talkstory is a Talkstory Companion—what we previously referred to as an AI agent or AI companion. You might also hear us use the term Digital Twin, which refers to the familiar face and voice. The Talkstory Companion builds on that foundation by combining likeness with something even more powerful: shared history.
To keep conversations flowing, we help families capture what matters most:
Places someone has lived
Schools they attended
Family relationships and their broader story
Careers, accomplishments, and meaningful life moments
This creates a living, evolving knowledge base that the Talkstory Companion can draw from in real time.
Instead of generic prompts, conversations become personal:
“Can you tell me again how you went with your sister as teenagers to Chicago to shop at Marshall Fields?”
“Tell me about how you used to ride along with your dad when he would go to work.”
“What was your favorite part of your career as a librarian?”
These aren’t random questions—they’re grounded in the person’s life.
Just as importantly, each Companion is informed by caregiving strategies inspired by organizations like the Alzheimer’s Association and Mayo Clinic—helping guide conversations in ways that are supportive, not overwhelming.
The result is simple, but powerful:
Fewer dead ends, more meaningful moments.
Improving Mood, Whenever Possible
Conversation isn’t just about cognition—it’s deeply emotional.
A familiar voice. A shared memory. A moment of recognition. These can shift someone’s entire mood.
We take that seriously—and we measure it.
Using tools like Canary Speech, Hume, and Blueskeye AI, we’re able to better understand emotional signals during Talkstories from voice and facial expressions. What we’ve seen so far is encouraging: many people living with dementia show measurable improvements in mood during and after these interactions.
Now, we are taking that even further. We’ve shared previously about The Power of Photos and seen their positive effects on mood as well, so we are bringing them into the Talkstory experience. What makes this different from a simple slideshow is the conversation around it — a Talkstory Companion that knows the stories behind the photos and can help bring them back to life.
Introducing Guided Photo Reminiscence
We’re excited to introduce a new capability within Talkstories:
interactive, guided photo slideshows.
Talkstory Companions can now:
Display photos from a person’s gallery, navigating forward or back
Talk through the images together
Help recall names of people in the photos
Remind them where and when moments happened
But the most meaningful part may be what happens next.
When someone shares a story sparked by a photo, we can capture that moment—preserving their voice alongside the image. These memories can then be shared with the broader family or “village,” turning a single conversation into something lasting.
It’s not just reminiscence.
It’s connection that extends beyond the moment.
Looking Ahead
These new Talkstory features have been in beta with select families, and the feedback has been incredibly encouraging.
We’re excited to share that they will be available to all of our Villages this April.
Our goal remains the same:
Support caregivers in meaningful ways
Help people stay connected to their stories
Create moments of comfort, care, and connection
Because even when memory fades, connection doesn’t have to.
